Raw Cashews
Cashews can be a great addition to a healthy diet because they are rich in protein, fiber, and iron. The American Society for Nutrition published a randomized controlled study that found cashews may play a role in lowering LDL cholesterol. They are rich in both monounsaturated as well as polyunsaturated fatty acids.
However, cashews can be a real problem. Its high in calories so limits your intake. Cashew nuts can also cause allergic reactions. Research has shown that they can lead to severe reactions such as anaphylaxis.
Raw cashew nuts are a type of cashew you should avoid. Multiple studies, including one by the Indian Journal of Critical Care, were highly poisonous. The toxin urushiol found in raw cashew shells is also present in poison oak and poison ivy. Urushiol poisoning of cashews can cause severe allergic reactions, dermatitis, and even rashes.
Raw cashews can be found in very few supermarkets. Most cashews come pre-roasted, which kills the urushiol. It’s best not to come across them. You don’t know what you’ll do, and it’s not worth it.
